Why You Should Search for a Career, Not a Job - Your Career Intel
Why You Should Search for a Career, Not a Job - Your Career IntelStatistics show that, during your working years, youll spend roughly a third of your time at work. Let that sink in. You spend mora time working than you do on any other activity in your life. Thats why finding career, leid a job, is a key component of a fulfilling life.It all comes down to the concept of career vs job. A job is something you do to pay the bills. A career pays the bills too, but it also affords you purpose, fulfillment and enjoyment. As a Managing Partner in executive recruitment, Ive helped hundreds of candidates find their way to careers that make them excited to go to work in the morning. If youre ready to leave your job behind and start planning a career, here are three simple steps to get your started.Identify Where Your Passion and Skills IntersectIt would be nice if passion was enough to pursue the career of your choice, but anyone who has ever seen an audition episode of American gtzenbild knows thats not true. Passion is what gets you motivated but, ultimately, you need to be great at whatever it is you want to do (and work hard at it) to get where you want to be.Create two columns on a piece of paper. On one side, list all of the things youre passionate about. On the other side, list all of the things youre good at. Dont hold back write down everything and anything that comes to mind. Then brainstorm every career that appeals to you and falls at the intersection. Finally, do your research and figure out which careers are viable options. After I left the U.S. Military, I had to go through this exercise myself. I had experience in management and engineering, but I didnt particularly enjoy those types of jobs. On the other hand, I had a passion for leading, training and counseling people, and I was skilled at that as well. Some career paths I considered were practical, while I set aside others for reasons like pay, geography and quality of life. Executive recruiting ticked al l of the boxes for me, and now I wake up every day thinking how good I have it.Lay the groundworkNow that youve got a short list of careers youre interested in, figure out what you need in order to gain entry into those fields. Leverage your network of contacts to gain informational meetings with people in your desired industry or industries. This is a great way to confirm which careers you want to pursue, get invaluable advice, and also build relationships that you can leverage later when its time to search for jobs. When going into a new field, youll usually (but not always) find that you need additional education. If you have the time and money, a graduate degree can be a great option for opening doors to a new career. But there are also night classes, associates degrees, seminars, volunteering and internships. Your informational meetings will help you determine what skill-building you need to do.Finally, get ready to apply for jobs. Youll want to rethink and rewrite your cover le tter and resume. Present your background in a way that spins your experience and skill set to be most appealing to prospective employers.Find the Perfect FitWhen you finally crack a new industry, its tempting to take any opportunity you can. But its important to think about whether its an environment where you can thrive. Theres nothing worse than finally clinching a job in the field of your dreams, only to discover that youve landed at a company thats not the right fit or working with people with whom that you dont get along. Your new career could stall before it even gets startedThink about your work style and what type of company culture best suits you. For example, if youre a self-starting multi-tasker, then a small start-up might be right for you. If you work best in a collaborative environment, perhaps a company that has a team-based approach to projects might be up your alley. Ask thoughtful questions during your interviews and make sure you meet your future team members befo re accepting any position.Even with all the best due diligence, its still possible to end up in a great job thats a bad fit. If that happens, your job is to give it 100% and try to make it work no matter what. Job hoppers come across as wishy washy to employers, so demonstrate stability and make the best of the situation for at least a year before moving on to greener pastures.Keep in mind that finding your career passion and bringing it to life doesnt happen overnight. It can take months or even years, depending on how dramatic a change youre making. But in the end, a career you love is worth the commitment. How have you discovered and pursued your career passion? Tell us your story in the comments below.

Want to Motivate Your Employees the Right Way Do These 7 Things
Want to Motivate Your Employees the Right Way Do These 7 Things Do you really know the right way to motivate your employees? If you think that raising their salaries, issuing commissions, or incentivizing them with money or bonuses is the best way to retain talent in the workplace, youre taking the wrong path.120 years of research suggests that the correlation between salary and job satisfaction is actually very weak. So, what is it you need to do to keep morale on the up and up? The answer might be much mora obvious (and significantly less expensive) than you think keep them engaged. Here are 5 simple, science-backed ways on how you can motivate your employees to perform well and deliver results.1. Be their mentor, not their boss.People cant grow if they are constantly being micromanaged by an overbearing boss. Give your employees room and opportunities to develop their skills and learn new things by acting more like their mentor instead. A good example of how to get started is by crea ting a personal development plan tailored for each employee. Help them carry out that plan through supervision and feedback.2. Remember to say thank you.Its no secret that receiving praise makes us feel good and driven to go above and beyond According toGallup research, people who receive regular praise at work tend to be more productive, satisfied, and engaged than those who do not. They are also more likely to stay with their company. Take the time to recognize your employees and their hard work daily. Making them feel appreciated is ultimately what drives positive workplace behavior and performance.3. Foster collaboration in your team.Tom Raths bookHow Full Is Your Bucketreveals the number one reason why Americans leave their jobs is because they dont feel appreciated. Encourage your employees to actively participate during meetings and discussions. They may offer great suggestions that can help resolve a pressing issue or spark the growth of your business. Furthermore, fostering collaboration within your team makes your employees feel valued and engaged.4. Empower your people.Sounds easier said than done, right? The truth is you can make everyone on your team feel empowered in little ways.Trust them. Ditch the micromanagement and show them that youre confident about their abilities. More often than not, most people need a little encouragement to believe in themselves and to realize that they have great potential.Encourage creativity. Guide them, dont control them.Give your people the freedom to find their own ways in resolving issues and continue to challenge them to think outside the box.Communicate a clear vision. Make sure that your team understands your goals and mission. Clearly define their goals and offer to answer any questions they may have so they have a sense of focus and direction.5. Offer plenty of kooperation.Communicate with your people regularly face-to-face. If they only hear from you through emails and Slack messages, you will find it har der to reach them. Your goal, as the leader and manager, is to foster relationships andcreate a team wherein everyone is supportive of each other. Speak to each team member one-on-one and hold group meetings. If they feel that you care about them and you support them, they are likely be just as loyal back to you.6. Dont punish failure. When your employees work in fear of being punished for every wrong move, they become less creative and stop thinking outside the box. They will settle to do the absolute least, rather than striving for excellence. Remember that as humans we all makes mistakes. When your workers make honest mistakes, dont punish them. Let them try again and support them until they succeed.7. Create a healthy company culture.More than building a conductive place to work, you also want to create a positive company culture that is fun and encouraging. A culture where everyone makes each other better, where kindness is the hottest commodity, and theres always room to make a nd keep learning from mistakes. As the leader, you have the responsibility of building this culture by being a role model and developing programs that align with your values and mission.Bottom line? Happy workers are productive workers and it takes more than money to keep them satisfied. Be their mentor. Offer praise and recognition. Cultivate collaboration. Support everyone on your team. Be open to making mistakes. Create a culture where they can thrive. If you do all of this, youll wind up with happy and productive employees that will remain forever loyal to you and your business.Lidia Staron is part of content and marketing team atopencashadvance.com. 5 Ways to Network in the Real World
5 Ways to Network in the Real World5 Ways to Network in the Real WorldBuild a stronger ansprechbar network by grounding those connections in face-to-face encounters.Online social networking may capture the lions share of attention nowadays, but the strongest bonds among people are still based on relationships established in the offline, physical world. How many friends on Facebook are your legitimate friends? When was the last time you contacted someone you met offline, instead of verbunden? I guarantee you keep in tick with your offline contacts more because you have a physical connection with them instead of an electronic oneAnd when it comes to garnering the attention of corporate recruiters, youre far more likely to score an interview if the hiring manager has previously met with you in person rather than through a Facebook request or a LinkedIn referral. You may feel anxious putting yourself out there, but taking the leap is crucial to your job search and overall career success. The more competitive the job market, the more aggressively you must expand your professional network and the less you should rely on LinkedIn and Facebook to do the heavy lifting for you. Remember that executive recruiters receive hundreds of LinkedIn invitations from people looking for jobs. One of the best ways to stand out in a cluttered online world is to get offline and meet face to face with the people in your online social network. This way, instead of being one of hundreds (or thousands) of online invitations, you become a name and face. Here are five steps to forging a real-world connection with those who can help you1. Reconnect with your current networkThe easiest way to meet new people is to leverage your current network. We all have networks, including our friends, family and acquaintances. Get up from your computer and start going to lunches and professional or social events in your industry. Attend these events with friends so you can be introduced to people with whom you wouldnt normally be in contact. This is especially useful when your friends have the same networking goals in mind and want to pool their efforts with you.2. Take online contacts offlineIf you already have an online following - on your blog, Facebook, Twitter or an online discussion forum - then you can tap into those communities to start meeting people offline. This is especially useful if youre introverted and youre looking to meet with peers you know already online. By meeting people offline, youll build a stronger network online and vice versa.3. Volunteer with a nonprofit organizationThere are so many nonprofit organizations out there, and if youre passionate about getting involved in one, all it takes is an e-mail or a phone call. Its important that you join the right organization so that you stay involved and meet the right people. For instance, if youre looking to promote new education and workforce strategies to low-income youth and adults, you might want to join Job s for the Future ( jff.org ). If youre looking to help raise money to stop poverty, then perhaps youd join Kiva ( kiva.org ). There is at least one nonprofit organization that aligns to your underlying values and career aspirations. Volunteering your time opens your mind, and your network, to new possibilities.4. Create remarkable business cards, and use themIf your business cards are thin and boring, consider investing in new ones. geschftlicher umgang cards can be cut into many shapes and sizes. A lot of companies offer different materials and formats as well. If your business cards include your own picture, people will remember your face after they meet you. It will also make you appear more personable in a networking situation. Dont put too much contact information on your cards because people will typically just Google your name. Stick with your preferred method of contact, a Web site or blog URL, a fancy design and cut, and your picture.5. Start a networking groupIf you want t o expand your network, start your own group, name it, and invite other people who would be interested in participating. By being the group organizer, youre immediately positioned as a leader people will want to speak with and get to know. It not only looks good on your resume that youre involved in a special-interest group, but it will give you the opportunity to meet the right people online and offline.
